Beer. Amsterdam, City of Beer and Brewers
Now on  - Nov 1, 2020  ( ends today )

Today, Amsterdam has over 45 breweries that perform a vital public service: keeping the 'biertje' culture alive with delicious brews. The Dutch capital's love affair with the amber nectar goes back hundreds of years – a history that's now being highlighted by 'Beer. Amsterdam, City of Beer and Brewers' at the Amsterdam Museum.

It's not just popular exports like Heineken and Amstel, every aspect of beer's role in Dutch history and culture is covered. Travel back to the 14th-century to a groundbreaking import agreement with Germany, and discover environmentally conscious modern brewers who turn their waste into bread and even electricity.

Learn about subtle distinctions in raw materials and processes that differentiate flavor and weight, and delve into the city's famous café culture courtesy of a pint-sized art exhibition. Your quest to find a symbolic sculpture made from beer bottles is finally over!

You can even leave with your very own Amsterdam Museum Beer. This summery IPA was renamed for the exhibition by the hop-savvy folks at Brewery Troost and is available in the museum shop and café.

Description

From the Middle Ages through the 17th century, and right up to the present day, the story of the Dutch capital is told through ancient artifacts and interactive exhibits. This delightful museum covers everything Amsterdam, and it's great for kids!

Amsterdam doesn't hide its charming canals, nor its famous vices. But to really get to know the city you want to know its history, and how it became the thriving metropolis we know today.

Housed in a former orphanage, this beautifully maintained Classicist building contains a curated collection of paintings, photographs, models, and artifacts telling the story of Amsterdam – from its origins right up to the present day.

It touches on all aspects of the city, from religion and folklore to showbiz, prostitution, and Ajax. The museum also includes many original orphanage furnishings, revealing the long and fascinating history of the building itself.
