Description

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is a 'floating city' of culture, packed to the immaculately designed gills with some of the greatest art in the world. See originals by the likes of Da Vinci, Matisse, Mondrian, Monet and more in a mind-boggling 64,000m2 museum designed by legendary architect Jean Nouvel. It's east meets west, in a groundbreaking gallery that's as much of a work of art as the masterpieces it contains.

Abu Dhabi's own Louvre dominates Saadiyat Island, with an instantly iconic design. The intricate girding of over 8,000 uniquely shaped metal stars comprise a giant domed roof, creating crisscrossing beams of light and shadow. The scale and audacity of the architecture rival Louvre 1.0.

Beneath, you'll discover a veritable village of 23 galleries, floating on a placid lake. Wandering the serene pathways is an experience in itself, but don't forget: there's legions of top-tier art awaiting inside. It's an embarrassment of riches.

Conceived as a 'universal' museum that's accessible to all, the collection is arranged chronologically, not geographically. This means you'll see works from Ancient Egypt alongside pieces from Europe and Asia, and you might spot a Van Gogh rubbing shoulders with small-scale folk art.

Celebrating the connections between people and cultures across the globe, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is an art museum in a league of its own.

Reviews

Set on one of AD new islands the museum is interesting but seems to lack a sense of AD heritage and culture. Have been to Louvre in Paris and the number of significant works on display/loan in AD is not significant but one or two of each prominent master. Could have added more of the Persian or Arabic history, rugs and artifacts that are important to AD and the region. Museum is beautiful structurally and is a reflective and calming enviorment. Few parts remain under construction and will add to the experience when done. Still a great experience but needed a bit "more".

It is well arranged. Excellent experience.

A very beautiful modern building with a well laid out collection of antiquities, sculptures and paintings starting at 5000 BC and finishing with artworks from the present day. As well as some paintings from the Louvre and the Musee d'Orsay in Paris by famous artists including Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh and so on, there are artifacts from all ages and civilisations not least from the Arab world and Abu Dhabi itself.
The staff are friendly and helpful and there's a distinctly French tone to the whole experience. There are excellent guides but you don't really need one as it's all so well presented with simple explanations accompanying the exhibits. What you do need is a good 2 to 3 hours to appreciate the experience, this is not a place to race through, buy the teeshirt and get back on the bus. And just as with all great galleries and museums you'll want to go back again and again.

It was a very fantastic visit to have an experience and photo collection to remember.

Too many kids over there.
It should be at least one day per week that the kids are not allowed.
In the restaurant, outside, in plen-air, it is still a no smoking area.
Childish!

Information regarding the exhibits was often unreadable as it was too low or too dark. The route around the museaum was not rasy to follow.
