Nothing at all, anywhere\u201d. But you will be surprised to find what lies beyond the hustle and bustle of the UK\u2019s capital! Whether you\u2019re a history buff, a culture junkie, an architecture enthusiast, the outdoors type, or just recently bitten by the travel bug, there\u2019s a lot to enjoy on these day trips from London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"1-bath\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong>Bath <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/ByaMCpjlzYP\/\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Known for \u2013 and named after \u2013 the baths built there by the Romans in the first century AD and surrounded by gorgeous green countryside, this city is a great choice for anyone looking to explore the UK. After spending a few hours in this idyllic city, you might even find yourself wondering if you\u2019re still in the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking for some inspiration before you make the trip to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/visitbath.co.uk\/things-to-do\/jane-austens-bath\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Austen\u2019s former home town<\/a>? You could of course choose the intellectual route and read&nbsp;<em>Northanger Abbey<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Persuasion<\/em>, her novels inspired by Bath, or you could just watch&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JF3ueHjUc3k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">this video<\/a>&nbsp;on repeat \u2013 your choice!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-to-get-there\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to get there<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Train: 1.5 hours from London Paddington Station<br>\nBus: 2.5 hours from London Victoria Coach Station<br>\nCar: 2.5 hours from Central London areas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"roman-baths\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roman Baths<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you arrive in Bath by train or bus, it\u2019s an easy walk to the center of town. Hit the Roman Baths Museum to hang with the Romans as soon as you arrive. There\u2019s a lot to learn and see in this museum so make sure to set aside a good couple of hours for this activity. Pick up the audio tour \u2013 it\u2019s a real gem and helps transport you back to ancient times with anecdotes about Roman bathing habits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, taking a dip in the supposedly curative waters isn\u2019t allowed. However, if you can&#8217;t resist the urge to take off your clothes and cannonball into the ancient waters, fear not, you can do so at the 21st-century&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thermaebathspa.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bath Spa<\/a>&nbsp;after your visit. Do keep in mind that the queue for the spa can be very long, especially on weekends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"time-for-tea\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Time for tea<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re feeling peckish after all that time-travelling, treat yourself to a typical Bath delicacy: tea. There are plenty of tea houses in Bath where you can find the popular Bath buns. However, if you\u2019re keen to do some more time-travelling, head to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sallylunns.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sally Lunn\u2019s Tea House<\/a>, one of the oldest houses in Bath. They even have a small kitchen-museum downstairs, which allegedly shows the actual kitchen where the young baker Sally Lunn \u2013 the Mary Berry of the 1680s \u2013 created the first Bath bun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"royal-crescent\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Royal Crescent<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For a perfect way to walk off that after-lunch dip, head up the hill towards the Royal Crescent. This curved row of 30 terraced houses is over 250 years old and offers impressive examples of Georgian architecture. While you recover from the uphill walk on the green fields in front of the houses, see if you can spot the one yellow door. The resident of this yellow-doored house faced two enforcement orders from Bath City Council before defending her decision to deviate from the traditional white door colour at a public enquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"museumsnbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Museums <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have some time left before you head back to the Old Smoke, consider paying a visit to one of Bath\u2019s many museums and galleries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Art lovers will enjoy the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.victoriagal.org.uk\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Victoria Art Gallery Museum<\/a>&nbsp;or the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Holburne Museum (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.holburne.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Holburne Museum<\/a>, while those who still aren\u2019t tired of time-travelling will revel in the opportunity to dress up as&nbsp;<em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em>\u2019s Elizabeth Bennet or Mr. Darcy at the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.janeausten.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Austen Centre<\/a>&nbsp;or the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fashionmuseum.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Fashion Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"pints-pints-pints\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pints, pints, pints<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Time to wind down and really soak up British culture with a cheeky pint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abbeyinnsbath.co.uk\/#coeur-de-lion-pub-bath\" target=\"_blank\">Coeur de Lion<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;is Bath\u2019s smallest pub and serves some very good local ale and cider. Its big brother, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abbeyinnsbath.co.uk\/#the-star-inn-bath\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Star Inn<\/a>, is a great example of a well-preserved old English public house. Whichever of these pubs you choose, make sure you taste the multi-award-winning local Bellringer ale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thescallopshell.co.uk\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Scallop Shell<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;is your place to go for some excellent fish &amp; chips. It was even nominated for the illustrious National Fish &amp; Chip Awards 2016!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/thepulteneyarms.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">The Pulteney Arms<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;do a sterling Sunday Roast to enjoy by the fireplace in winter and in the courtyard during summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"2-oxford\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Oxford<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B_UY0a9nXJi\/\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Oxford is, of course, most well-known for its prestigious university \u2013 the oldest university in the English-speaking world. This long and rich history combined with a cosy student vibe makes Oxford a perfect destination for a day trip from London. Oh, and Harry Potter fans will have a blast here too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-to-get-there-2\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to get there<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Train: 1 hour from London Paddington Station and London Marylebone Station <br>\nBus: 1.5 hours from several London bus stations<br>\nCar: 1 hour from Central London areas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"oxford-university\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Oxford University<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You cannot visit Oxford without exploring at least some of the ancient colleges and their beautiful chapels and grounds. The fee for visiting each college is between \u00a32 and \u00a37, so it\u2019s worth picking a few you\u2019d really like to see. A not so famous, but very beautiful option is Worcester College. The college&#8217;s lake, swans, and gorgeous low-hanging trees make it a wonderful place to spend some quiet time in \u2013 you can even release your inner-child and try climbing the trees!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a fan of the Harry Potter films (I mean, of course, you are) make sure to visit Christ Church college. The Great Hall was the inspiration for the grand dining hall at Hogwarts and the staircase that leads up to the Great Hall was used for the arrival scene for new Hogwarts students in the first two films. When you are done tramping up and down those stairs waving an imaginary wand, take a stroll in the beautiful Christ Church meadows, situated behind the college, and see how many swans, ducks, and geese you can fit into one selfie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"covered-market\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Covered Market<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If all this strolling has made you hungry, Covered Market is just a five-minute walk from Christ Church college and has a great range of food options. Just beyond the market, you\u2019ll find&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nosebagoxford.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Nosebag<\/a>, a great little caf\u00e9 that offers nice views of the street for some people-watching. There&#8217;s also a great seasonal menu that features food which only uses locally sourced ingredients. Make sure to try their pancakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"bodleian-library\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bodleian Library<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that your stomach has been expanded, it\u2019s time to expand the mind. Head over to the Bodleian Libraries, which make up the largest university library system in the UK  \u2013 they are one of the oldest libraries in Europe. Book a guided tour to visit the beautiful, historic rooms of the Old Bodleian Library, which includes the 15th-century Divinity School and medieval Duke Humfrey\u2019s Library. This is another must for Harry Potter fans as both locations were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.experienceoxfordshire.org\/oxford-harry-potter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">featured in the films<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"punting\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Punting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A sunny day in Oxford is the perfect opportunity to spend some time on the water. Punting is a very popular Oxford activity and the ideal way to show off your strength in front of your friends. A small city, easily navigated by foot, this is the perfect day trip from London if you\u2019re looking for a break from the noise and crowds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-to-get-there-3\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to get there<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Train:  1.5 hours from London St. Pancras International Station and London Victoria Station <br> Bus: 2.5 hours from London Victoria Coach Station <br> Car: 1.5 hours from Central London areas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"westgate-gardens-and-towers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Westgate Gardens and Towers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start your day in Canterbury with (window)-shopping in Burgate Street and brunch on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cote.co.uk\/restaurant\/canterbury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"C\u00f4te&nbsp;Brasserie terrace (opens in a new tab)\">C\u00f4te&nbsp;Brasserie terrace<\/a>. It\u2019s the perfect spot for people-watching and enjoying the performances of buskers on the busy Parade Street. After brunch, pick up some strawberries from the fruit-sellers and wander over to the beautiful Westgate Gardens. The Lanes are a maze of narrow streets filled with funky independent shops and caf\u00e9s. If vintage is your thing, make sure to set aside some time to browse the vintage shops for hidden gems, or hop into one of the many hip coffee shops and sip on the perfect brew while enjoying the performance of one of the many buskers livening up The Lanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-pier\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Pier<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably the most well-known sight in Brighton,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brightonpier.co.uk\/\">the pier<\/a>&nbsp;is a busy traditional seaside attraction. It\u2019s probably also one of the most tourist-laden places in the city. The uphill climb makes for a pretty good workout as there are over 100 steps up and down. At the top, you will find the remnants of an Iron Age fort as well as the buried ruins of a Norman chapel.
