If you want to take public transport, there\u2019s a dedicated train service from Pla\u00e7a Espanya Train Station to Monistrol de Montserrat station every hour. It takes roughly one hour to get there. Easy peasy.<br><br>From the base of the mountain, you can choose between a cable car and a cogwheel train. Just shy of 150 km away, it\u2019s far enough that the swarms of tourists are much sparser here. But you\u2019ll still notice an artsy-looking international crowd milling about with puzzled expressions, as if they\u2019ve just encountered something very surreal that they need some time to process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Oqc9r7W.gif\" alt=\"The enigmatic Salvador Dal\u00ed with his trademark moustache. \" class=\"wp-image-18055\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s likely because Figueres is the hometown of Salvador Dal\u00ed, the eccentric master of <em>Surrealism <\/em>and one of the true geniuses and icons of the 20th century. Dal\u00ed\u2019s mind-bending art and off-the-wall personality were a pure embodiment of the fine balance between creativity and madness, and his influence continues to reverberate in art circles and popular culture today.<em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/MXNm3gN.gif\" alt=\"Actor Adrian Brody portrays Salvador Dal\u00ed in the film Midnight in Paris. \" class=\"wp-image-18040\" style=\"width:944px;height:544px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A swashbuckling career took him on many adventures across the continents (mostly so he could meet those rhinoceroses), but Dal\u00ed always had a soft spot in his heart for Figueres. It\u2019s here that he had his bonkers monument to <em>Surrealism<\/em>, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/dali-theatre-museum-tickets-l143991\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dal\u00ed Theatre-Museum<\/a>, built. Like the man himself, it\u2019s quite unlike anything else, and makes for one of the best Barcelona day trips in and of itself, especially if you have an affinity for the kooky side of art.&nbsp;<br><br>Of his museum, Dal\u00ed mused: <em>\u201cI want my museum to be a single block, a labyrinth, a great surrealist object. It will be a totally theatrical museum. The people who come to see it will leave with the sensation of having had a theatrical dream.\u201d<\/em>  It\u2019s hard to argue that he didn\u2019t achieve his bombastic ambition \u2013 it really is one of the world\u2019s most unique museums. It also features an enormous glass dome, and is bordered by tall, spindly cypress trees that give it a distinctly <em>Surrealist<\/em> appearance.&nbsp;<br><br>Inside, the museum houses the largest collection of Dal\u00ed\u2019s art in the world. It\u2019ll change how you feel about experiencing art and museums, but then again, that\u2019s sort of the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"while-youre-there-2\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>While you\u2019re there<\/strong>&#8230;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have time, and your brain isn\u2019t completely scrambled by Dal\u00ed\u2019s maniacal museum, you should also check out some of the other museums in town. There\u2019s the Museu De L\u2019Empord\u00e0, a museum of art and archaeology with works by Catalonia\u2019s most celebrated artists, including Sorolla, Casas, Gargallo, T\u00e0pies, and, yep, more Dal\u00ed.<br><br>There\u2019s also a museum of 18th and 19th-century technology, and the always-cool Catalonian Toy Museum, where you\u2019re sure to find lots of awesome action <em>Figueres<\/em>. ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"barcelona-to-figueres-how-to-get-there\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Barcelona to Figueres<\/strong> <strong>\u2013 how to get there<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Public transport is a good option, with regular trains departing from Barcelona Sants to Figueres Vilafant station every day, and the journey clocking in at just under an hour.<br><br>If you want to prime yourself a bit for the experience, and learn a bit more about Dal\u00ed and his legacy, and really make a whole day trip out of it, your best bet is a<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/figueres-attractions-c66292\/tickets-for-dali-museum-girona-guided-tour-from-barcelona-skip-the-line-p977193\/\" target=\"_blank\"> guided bus tour from Barcelona<\/a> to the museum. With dramatic Gothic buildings, elegant <em>Modernista<\/em> villas, multicolored riverfront tenements, and winding cobblestone streets, you could spend the whole day wandering around just reveling in the grand architectural spectacle of it all.&nbsp;<br><br>Unsurprisingly, there is a plethora of awesome stuff to do in Girona while you\u2019re gawping at how pretty it is. If it\u2019s your first time here, the best way to get acquainted with its unique cultural blend, and find your feet in the city, is with a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/girona-attractions-c66285\/tickets-for-girona-cathedral-old-town-guided-tour-p993055\/\" target=\"_blank\">guided tour of the old town district and the colossal Gothic Cathedral<\/a>. Famous scenes in Bravos and King\u2019s Landing were filmed here, and while you don\u2019t <em>have <\/em>to have seen or even like the show to be blown away by the magnificence of the Cathedral, <em>GoT <\/em>fans will no doubt be doubly impressed. Wait\u2026 you\u2019ve never even heard of the show? <em>Shame! Shame! A short drive outside the city in the rural town of P\u00fabol is the Castle of P\u00fabol, aka the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/pubol-attractions-c262886\/tickets-for-gala-dali-castle-p979160\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gala Dal\u00ed Castle House-Museum<\/a>. This is the Gothic-Renaissance castle that Salvador Dal\u00ed purchased for his beloved wife, Gala. As you do. Dal\u00ed wanted Gala to have a place to live out her twilight years in peace, and occasionally entertain visits from her husband, upon her advance written consent. You can\u2019t make this stuff up.<br><br>So in the spirit of creating a peaceful sanctuary of calm for his elderly wife, Dal\u00ed filled the castle with the wackiest dec\u00f3r his mercurial mind could conjure. We\u2019re talking elephants, giraffes, and a secret taxidermy horse \u2013 of course \u2013 which can be spied through the glass top of a small coffee table, one floor above.&nbsp;Brilliant!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cd050314dc064ef6bdad492a78ec4db5-1.jpg\" alt=\"The Gala Dal\u00ed Caslte-House Museum in Girona makes for another wonderful day trip from Barcelona.\" class=\"wp-image-18046\" style=\"width:1000px;height:926px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>While Dal\u00ed\u2019s quirky interior design choices might not fit everyone\u2019s idea of <em>Feng Shui, <\/em>there is an undeniable playfulness, charm, and even romance to the place. The dedication on display is quite moving, and it\u2019s clear how much the artist adored his muse. You could say that because of Casa Gala Dal\u00ed, her memory persists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"while-youre-there-3\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>While you\u2019re there&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Girona<strong> <\/strong>has plenty to offer aside from its flagship attractions. For starters, it\u2019s a foodie\u2019s paradise. You could, in theory, blindfold yourself, strike out in any direction and smack face-first into a culinary gem within a minute. However, the city\u2019s best restaurant, <em>El Cellar de Can Roca,<\/em> might require some advance booking.&nbsp;<br><br>It\u2019s been awarded three Michelin stars, voted the world\u2019s best restaurant three times, and famously featured on Netflix\u2019s <em>Chef\u2019s Table<\/em> series.
