The famous Palace of Versailles had humble beginnings before it was transformed into the extravagant display of wealth it’s known for today. This 2,300-room palace actually started as a small hunting lodge before it became the primary residence for the Kings of France.
Louis XIV saw an opportunity to move the court away from Paris and centralize his power. He realized how vulnerable his position was in the capital city. As a result, he set his sights on his father’s hunting chateau as the future home of the French court. Louis XIV then took the surrounding land and the chateau and began creating the lavish palace we know and love today.
Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King, moved the court to Versailles as a ploy to diminish the power of the French nobility. He forced the nobility to spend time away from their personal homes, and diminish their regional power–all while getting them drunk regularly–in hopes the nobles would be less likely to revolt. However, he did undermine the future power of the French people.
Versailles became the monarch’s residence for over 100 years before the French Revolution took control. In 1789, the French Revolution brought Louis XVI to Paris, and the palace would never be a royal residence again.
Since its epic days as the home of the monarchy, Versailles became a museum in 1837 and then a World Heritage site in 1979.
