Calling all party animals! Time to join the real ones with ZOOmeravonden at Amsterdam’s Artis Royal Zoo.
Every Saturday night this summer, till the end of August, ZOOmeravonden (summer evenings) is tempting guests to mingle with the lions, tigers and bears… well, outside of their enclosures at least. Say ‘you snooze, you lose’ to the animals as they go to sleep for the night, but stay awake with your nocturnal buddies for a brilliant line-up!
Live music to fall in love to
If you’re planning a Saturday night date with someone special, why not charm them with a night at the zoo, when live musicians will be fighting for airtime with the birds, monkeys and other noise-making animals? Here’s what’s on…
July 29th. 19:00: Aafke Romejin brings the world of analogue synthesizers and other antique instruments to the zoo’s gardens with quirky tunes from her second album ‘You Do Your Best But’.
August 5th. 19:00: Pop-star Sef has a well-established name thanks to a series of guest performances, including singing the chorus on Dio’s ‘Timepiece Machine’, and the chorus of number 1 hit ‘Roll Bakpao’ by The Opposites. Hear him perform tracks from his latest album, ‘Excusez Moi’.
August 10th. 19:00: Adding some extra atmosphere to the ARTIS music tent is laGarçon, a band who describe their music as #nouveausoulatin: a blend of Gospel, Soul, P-Funk, Latin, Zappan, and R&B. That’s pretty much a bit of everything, then.
August 19th. 19:00: Celine Cairo and Norman Vladimir share the stage on this special summer night. Celine Cairo performs dreamy songs from her debut album ‘Free Fall’, while Norman Vladimir proves why he was chosen to perform for, among others, Barack and Michelle Obama. Singer-songwriter perfection.
Settle down for a picnic in the grass, or tuck into a pizza or organic burger, cooked fresh at the outdoor kitchen. Want to grow your own? Take some tips from the pros on how to create an edible garden (no more lining up for veggies in Albert Heijn!)
Watch the vets and microbiologists giving inspiring talks about their jobs. There are loads of workshops and tours for adults and kids to get involved in, too. You’ll probably all want to work at the zoo afterwards.
Still not enough? You can end the night with a twilight tour of the park. And don’t forget that zookeepers and animal carers will be hanging out around the zoo to share the secrets of the animals and to answer any of your burning questions. Why does the lion sleep tonight? Why do gorillas beat their chests? And why can’t you take one of those cute chimpanzees home with you?
